The evolution of computing science will not have a specific name like Java or C++ instead it will be more of a style that will be more geared toward the emulation of real life objects and their relationships and interactions with other objects. Currently programming languages are able to have interactions with other objects via a graphics applet, such as “Turtle Graphics in Python”. With the new language objects programmed will be able to interact with the users and other objects created in a 3D interface. Operating systems implement this well like the recycling bin on your desktop, it acts as a place to dump your files, but it also reflects a real world object. This new programming language in a way will try to mirror that concept; it will be called virtual object orientated programming. The people who will use this will be programmers in general and those who wish to implement these algorithms in real life.

In the year 2015 with technology evolving at such a fast pace,
computing science has naturally evolved to adapt with these changes.
Object orientated programming especially has advanced in particular,
though still keeping to its roots of making separate classes and objects
to form a hierarchy or a super class of objects. The advancement is
that the language looks more like English, similar to programming
in Python. The codes themselves begin to look simpler but at the
same time more efficient. Instead of coding “for (int x=0; x<n; x++)”
(Sun Java, 2008),programmers now simple type “do x, while x is
less than n, and x++”.With a high level of programming and the
simple ease of the English language, programming itself becomes
more accessible to everyone and easier to learn.

Five years later, virtual object orientated programming was invented. It allowed programmers to see their objects in a virtual environment with interactions that are no longer abstract. Programming in this era acts as a simulation of real life instead of abstract code written in a notepad. This made programming more applicable in real life situations. For example we could create a cruise ship, create different objects such as rooms, speed, weight etc. Using the new virtual object orientated programming we could see our object come to life and test it under different conditions such as storms or a collision with another boat. This makes an open source simulation program; anyone can make a simulator for any purpose. This eliminates the need for expensive simulation programs being bought by companies. This helps society because everything can be tested and therefore the safety of products being made will be more rigorously tested.

The first milestone can be compared to a language called “Python”, itself is a very simple language to learn code and read. For example to make a program run a certain amount of times, we would say “For x in range (n)” (Edgar, 2005), which means run ‘x’, ‘n’ times. If were to combine this style with a more java like code, this would mean we would have a high level language with its sophistication and the ease of coding like python. The second milestone can be compared to real life simulators such as a flight simulator. In a simulator you are exposed to a 3D world in which you can interact with and learn with. The only difference with the next technology is that you would get to see the objects you created interact with an environment that you created.

In 1965 Gordon Moore predicated “that the number of transistors on a chip will double about every two years” (Intel ). This means in fifteen yours our computers in general should be about 128 times better than they are currently. With this kind of upgrade it would be possible for a programming interface to support a 3D programming environment. Presently video games have physics engines that allow gamers to interact with their environment; this technology along with upgraded computers would allow this to be a plausible outcome for the advancement of programming. These theories of advancement are based on the technology we have right now, and the idea that we are constantly evolving technology to a new level. Since simulators, virtual environments and pseudo code all exist presently it is logical to assume that it can be implemented into another form of technology.

I used information from wikipedia and the internet to find out the information on Bill and simply filled out the required fields pertaining to the information. The 6 friends that I used were selected merely because of business connections with Bill, excluding George Bush. Steve Jobs is the CEO of Apple, and we all know that Bill Gates owns a portion of Apple. Alex Seropian was the former CEO of Bungie, he quit after the release of Halo which was released on the Microsoft Xbox. Halo was one of the top games on that console. Kenzou is the CEO of Capcom, Capcom has released numerous games on for Microsoft. Lastly Melinda Gates is his wife.

Throughout history technology has been ever changing, even though we are considered digital natives and are the ‘experienced’ users of technology today, technology existed in both pre industrial and industrial eras. Their forms of technology were obviously not computerized like ours or had complicated interfaces, but instead were more mechanical and user operated. In comparison to technology today, technology had that time required skill to use, like a silk weaving machine. Even though computer programming has just come out recently it still has roots in the past. The concept of procedural mechanics and operations came around during the 1700s and the idea of Boolean logic, which is a key building block to computing science, was developed around the late 1800s.

Some programs are written merely for a procedural purpose, these instructions must be unambiguous and direct to the point. An example in pseudo code would be, ‘When count equals 100, print complete’. A more basic form of this would be “specifying a sequence of choices amongst a set of possible machine actions in such a way that the machine can carry out the sequence completely automatically” (Randell). During the 1700s three French inventor’s named Bouchon, falcon, and Vaucanson developed an automatic sequencing silk weaving machine. Jacquard in the 19th century finally commercialized this idea and created an “automatic draw-loom which used strung-together punched cards Each card [in the machine] controlled the selection of warp threads that were to be raised ready for a single passage across the loom of the shuttle carrying the weft thread (Randell)”. This would mirror procedural purpose instructions in computer programming. The ability to make silk clothing faster and more efficiently shows a trend in society, that people are able to afford more expensive clothing. The impact this had on society was that it allowed more people to buy silk clothing at a cheaper price because it was easier to make. The effect on the individual was that it allowed the person a status symbol, silk at that time was expensive and sometimes had to be imported from other countries such as china. If a person could afford silk clothing it showed wealth and therefore put them in a higher class than others. The effect on society was that further showed a class structure between the people.

When we dive deeper into the understand of Computing Science or programming itself, we realize that in code we have such statements as ‘if a equals 1, return true, else return false’, this is an example of Boolean logic. Many programs when looked at have these statements or a variation of a Boolean statement. The idea of Boolean logic arose during the industrial revolution around 1854 by a man named George Boole, which was detailed in his paper title “An Investigation of the Laws of Thought, on Which Are Founded the Mathematical Theories of Logic and Probabilities” (Redshaw, 1996). Boolean logic is based on statements consisting of logical ‘AND’, ‘OR’ and ‘NOT’, for example you could have the statement “Combinatorics is a required course for sophomores, and Margaret Mitchell wrote Gone with the Wind” (Grimaldi, 1999) this statement would only be true if both statements were true. We see Boolean logic itself as a practical part of technology being implemented in such devices such as electrical circuits that require ‘on’ and ‘off’ switches. An example of this from the industrial revolution was the telephone switch board, “The first commercial switchboard opened in 1878 to serve the 21 telephone customers in New Haven, Connecticut” (Telephone switching, 2009). If a plug was in the hole than it would mean that two people were on the phone talking to each other. The idea of Boolean logic itself would not affect society, but the inventions derived upon it would, like the telephone switchboard; which allowed people to communicate over a distance with each other, without the reliance on courier mail or courier pigeon. The trends of this period would not affect the need for Boolean logic, but again its inventions that are based on it would be a product of the trend, using the telephone again, the need to communicate more efficiently is always a part of a trend in society.

Presently banks have offered a service, called online banking. When it comes to online banking, most of us just type in our account number and go on our way with our business. Banks implement programming codes so that you are able to do your banking from a computer through an algorithm. Basically you would become the object of algorithm, which would mean your name, account number and money in your account. After banks may define a variable which could be an interest rate and apply that to your balance. Other options would include withdrawal, deposit and of course banking fees, this can all be written up in the program (Loftus, 2009) refer to figure “Listing 4.4” also to see the full algorithm. A trend this shows is convenience in today’s society. People in general prefer a faster alternative than having to drive to the bank to pay bills or to withdraw money. The impact this has on an individual is that it allows them the convenience of having a bank in front of their fingertips. The affect on society is that it provides an alternative to driving to the bank to do your business.

As time progresses technology advances and becomes more efficient to its purpose, and becomes less reliant on a user, from silk weaving to online banking we see that it becomes less user dependant to use but more user friendly. This concept could eliminate valuable skills we learn by using older types of technology, for example using a silk weaving machine required skill to use in the 18th century, because you would have to control the strings and panels, but now machines do all that after a user programs a set of instructions. At this rate technology will become automated because of programming that it will come to a point where it will be able to self start, without us having to push the buttons.

    * Judging from your experience in this collective project, what are the benefits and limitations of this form?
The benefits of this collective project were that we could edit each others ideas to make them better. Another benefit was that we could see what everyone was writing and get ideas from that.
The limitations of this blog were communication, since it was with the whole class we would have leave a message on the blog and hope that the person that the message was intended for would log onto the blog and read it. Than they would have to respond back and you would have to log on at the right time to see the message.
* Did this experiment work? (explain why or why not.)
Yes it worked because the wiki article was completed.
* How does this research project differ in form, style, breadth, depth and content from one you would have produced by yourself? Give specific examples.
Form – The form of writing varies from each topic because the authors are different.
style – All articles have APA citation but the way the paragraphs are written are different because of the different authors
depth and conten – How much each topic is talked about will obviously vary from each author
* How did it change the experience of using a wiki to be in the same room as the other people using the system?
The Experience was different because working alone it would have been completely up to you to do all the research and write about it, but since this was a wiki research project the individual was only responsible for one section or topic. Even though we were only responsible for one section other people could still contribute to it and edit it at their leisure.

Programming itself is a form of computing science which is defined as the “study of algorithms and data structures, including their formal and mathematical properties, hardware realizations, linguistic realizations and applications.” (Edgar, 2004). Programming in the present can be found anywhere from your web browser to any application requiring an algorithm. Presently though, programming itself has taken a turn toward object orientated programming (OOP). Languages such as Java or C++ are written around this concept. Object orientated programming is different from traditional programming in the sense that it contains fundamental concepts such as classes, methods and instances, all of which enable (OOP) to be object orientated (Object-oriented programming, 2009). For example if you were to take a look at the source code of www.youtube.com it would exhibit such codes as “class=”fm2-title-border-box-gray””which means that it is defined as a class, with a title and the border is a gray box. Object orientated programming has affected society in a discreet way, it is evident that most ‘digital natives’ such as ourselves go through our everyday experience of technology without even noticing (OOP) in our applications. Object orientated programming has allowed us “to determine possible objects in the problem you need to solve, and how to represent them” (Filimon, 2007).

One situation that all of us will encounter throughout our lives is banking, banks lately have offered a service, called online banking. When it comes to online banking, most of us just type in our account number and go on our way with our business. A bank may use an algorithm to enable you to do your banking; this algorithm could be written in (OOP). Basically you would become the object of algorithm, which would mean your name, account number and money in your account. After banks may define a variable which could be an interest rate and apply that to your balance. Other options would include withdrawal, deposit and of course banking fees, this can all be written up in the program (Loftus, 2009), refer to figure “Listing 4.4” also to see the full algorithm.

Object orientated programming is also available in our pockets; mobile phones and smart phones containing applications called “widget applications” (Krill, 2009). Recently Sun Java Microsystems has released their latest software called “Java On Device Portal (ODP)” (Krill, 2009). Examples of this software are Weatherbug, which enables you to check the weather on your mobile device or such applications on the “Forbes” website which enable you to view topics such as lifestyle, stocks and technology. With the release of the (ODP), it will enable us “to make it easier for Java developers to quickly create these small widget applications using a consistent framework, and the second part is an on-device portal that lets that widget appear and be dynamically delivered” (Krill, 2009). These applications usually appear in gizmos which have “short lifespan and more functionality crammed into it than you will ever use or understand” (Sterling, 2004). In turn we become as stated by Sterling “End-Users”. We becoming “End-Users” means that the gizmo itself dies with us, than we are forced to by the next “spime” and in the process becomes “wranglers” for it (Sterling, 2004). This cycle is what technology itself has come to, which leads us to the next point, since programming is in almost all technology, does it have a negative effect on society?

Programming itself is merely just a tool used to build objects greater than it, like any tool it can be used for positive means or for a negative purpose. A positive purpose would be like the banking example earlier. Online banking has made a life easier in the sense that, from our homes we do not have to wait in line for a teller, pay bills from our seats and have the convenience to access our bank accounts at our whim. The applications that fill our gizmos can be argued that it is negative in certain areas. For example an application that allows you to look at news articles on your phone or laptop, this is negative in the sense that you would never purchase a news paper since you can get the news for free, thus news paper companies lose money. Programming itself is not directly negative or positive; it is how we choose to use it that defines its attributes.

Programming is a form of technology will evolve and surpass its current state. Currently object orientated programming is the standard of programming used by such high level languages like Java, C++, Pascal, and Python. In the future this type of programming might evolve into a more advance pseudo code language that is still complex at the same time. This would mean codes would look more like the English language and thus be easier to write and read. This is possible because since computers themselves become more powerful every year it would be feasible to processor to understand pseudo code, parse and compile the codes without hindering the processing speed. Programming has made it easier for us to make practical solutions to everyday problems in a simulated environment and this have been a benefit for society.
Think about the different media that you used, and the purposes for which you used specific media. Were some media better suited to specific purposes? (For example, the media you chose to use for social interaction versus information gathering: Why did you make these choices?)

I communicated through msn messenger and my cell phone. The types of media I used were the internet, my ipod. The internet itself was used for both social and information purposes, but it is best suited for information gathering, a better means of social communication is the cell phone.

Why do you think this medium was the most commonly used one?

The internet was the most common communication medium. I think this was the most commonly use because; through the internet I can communicate through msn messenger, forums and through email.

3. What was the most common purpose for the communication media you used?

To do research for school or to talk to people

Please explain your answer.

Using media as a vehicle of communication has taught me that I am dependant on technology, I either need music in my ear or I am on my laptop chatting with people or using it for school related purposes.

Why is this surprising? Please explain.

The most surprising thing that I have learned is that I am using the internet a lot. This is surprising because I did not realize that I was dependant on the internet for my school work or to communicate with people.

Name 2 or 3 possible implications, and explain them.

The internet allows me to do research from my home, saving me time from finding books and the library, and being at the library itself. Also the internet always me to communicate easily and cost efficiently around the world. Lastly the internet always to download free media such as music and movies.

Name 2 or 3 possible implications, and explain them.

Technology makes us lazy and reluctant to do physical activity. Also not everything on the web is true and sometimes we tend to believe what we read.

8. How do you think your life would be if you did not have access to communication media. Please talk about both the positive and the negative things that might happen.

If I did not have access to communication media I would be more willing to talk to people face to face , the negative side of this would be that to communicate without any means of media would mean that I would have to only talk to people that were near me.

9. If you had to choose one communication media to take on a desert island, which one would you choose and why?

I guess technology, hasn’t come far enough that we can create robots that can climb up a simple of set of stairs. I kid, its pretty hard actaully, im surprised honda even tried to create a robot to do this. It still funny to watch it fail, and try to hide it with curtains. On a serious note, this shows that we are on our way to create fully operational robots and one day we can have robot servants. I cant wait for that day LOL.

My favorite form of technology is the internet becauase of the various uses for it. Some of the uses for it that I enjoy, are surfing the net and playing online games with my friends. The internet also enables me to keep in touch with friends and family though msn and facebook. A more practical use for the internet is for helping me with my research and school work. Lastly I enjoy the internet because of youtube, and all the funny sites out there
